The Week In
Yeah I skipped this last week, and didn’t write anything. My actual goal of getting into the habit of writing, working more on the longer form work, failed completely. I looked at my current project and I entirely dropped it on January 2, despite it being in pretty good shape. So that’s probably it for the shorts, unless I get inspired and smash something out. It’s also the time of year where all the fresh resolution energy has thoroughly washed away, all the loose ends and stray tasks are piling up, the clean lines are being rubbed away. It is, if I’m to go full Business Dickhead, the end of Q1.
I was also sick during the week, and still am really, my lungs have stuff in them and I’m sleeping poorly. I took one day off and immediately felt well enough to do an evening run, which was, in hindsight, a bad idea. I’ve also been eating almost exclusively garbage. Soldier on, I guess.
Consumption
Music
Nothin’ specific. I have tickets to a few gigs now in the summer. Black Country New Road, Big Thief and St. Vincent.
Books
I finished the Ruins a little while ago. It did not let up, and I guess spoiler though it was kind of inevitable, everyone died horribly. I took a hiatus from fiction briefly to read Careless People, the thing about how Facebook is terrible and run by idiots, and Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman. The latter is a pretty fun portrait of an extremely horny, plain spoken and humble Nobel prize winning physicist. There’s lots more in the book about his adventures learning the bongos or taking up sketching so he can look at nude models than, say, his time on the Manhattan project.
Movies
It’s been two weeks, and one of them I was alone for like three days, so: The Wicker Man is still fun as hell. The Master, by PTA, on a rewatch, is fascinating now that I have a better grip on the character arcs. The Sweet Hereafter was bleak. Undertone (sorry, you don’t get a lowercase letter) I went out to the cinema for, which was worth it for the sound design but the story itself was somewhat silly. And lastly I Saw the TV Glow, which had some impressive imagery but I just recoiled from emotionally, I have so little common humanity with these characters, despite being a ’90s kid who watched way too much TV. As with World’s Fair, I see what you’re doing, you’re doing it very well, and I kind of hate it.
TV
One more Deadwood episode. It’s so good, and I’m once again furious it was cancelled abruptly.
Production
Running
The snow is gone. Wednesday was nice so I did 17km. Other than that, the usual kind of thing. Still sick, and still have this lingering strain, neither of which are helping matters.
Writing
I put (net) 200 words into a longer piece. But I deleted a lot, so probably produced a lot as well.
